Traditional scene: Summer cottage at the Lake

Hello people,

i'd like to show you my newest work. Although it is not the final version, i decided to release this view as "done and not wip" for the moment. I will continue creating the interior and optimizing the garden stuff (and also improving some exterior parts).

Everything is 3D. I used "Onyx Tree Storm" and a few "XFrog" plants for the garden - the rest has been created by me (including architectural mistakes ^^). The scene was done in 3D Studio Max 2009, rendered with VRay 1.5 SP2 and post produced in Photoshop CS4.

The first screenshot shows the rendered version. The second one the CryEngine-Rebuild and the last view the wireframe.

Additional information: I also revisited the scene and rebuild the second screenshot using CryEngine2 as well. Of course - lots of stuff has been cheated to get the same result, but it works.

Hope you like it!

In addition, here is the wireframe:

CryEngine2 - Realtime Fantasy Game Environment - Part 1

Greetings,

i'd like to show you the first screenshots of my upcoming realtime fantasy game environment project. Please excuse the huge filesize! I used CryEngine 2 to realize this fantasy scenario and hope to finish it very soon.

The fantasy scene i created is just for portfolio purpose and there won't be a deathmatch map or something like that. This thing is not a mod, although the fps would be adequate for use in a video game.

On my old Intel Quadcore 6600 (using a Ati Radeon HD 4870 graphic card) the map runs fine (System -> Win7 64 bit with high graphic specs ingame). The fps are between 13 and 26 frames. They would be even better if i spent more time on optimization, but since this project is just for visual demonstration i focussed more on design than on performance.

All models have been created by me, except some of the original crysis plants & rocks and two small tree model packs, the European Nature Set by Michael Betke and the Pine Tree Pack by Mr.Guybrush II and Orange_Duck. I used 3D Studio Max, ZBrush and Photoshop for the models (and some other little tools) and the Sandbox2 editor (respectively the Crysis SDK) for the map itself.

I will upload more screenshots and an ingame trailer within a few weeks. I will also post more information when it's done.

I'll also posted the screenshots here:

Hello out there,

so this is my first real 3D render work. Modelling/Texturing with 3D-Max, rendered with Vray 1.5 RC3 and post production in Photoshop.

Since i am more familiar with game design (i created lots of maps for several games and created a few bigger mods for the first Halflife (Public Enemy and Brainbread)) you will recognize this influence for sure, although my intention was to create an image with a 2D-attitude.

It is the study chamber of the archmage. Always untidy and full of stuff he does not really need to create his new spell potions and magic scrolls. Hope you like it.

Fantasy Environment: The other Realm

Hello my friends,

this time i like to show you another traditional fantasy scene. My first intention was to create a realtime environment for the mod project i am currently working on with my brother, but after including the foliage, i decided to improve some parts of the image to create a render pic. So finally it turned out to be some sort of semi-realtime-render-picture. Polycount is rather high because of the tress, but nearly realtime optimized for the buildings. In theory i could convert the scene for a realtime engine. ;-)

After creating a realistical scene with my house image (summer cottage at the lake), i wanted this piece to look more like an illustration again - as most of my other works. Ah - and please excuse the dirty thumbnail trick. I know that the lady is just a very small detail of one of the additional buildings in the scene. :-P

I hope you like it!

Best Regards,
Fynn

PS.: This is the updated version of the image. Special thanks to the digital painter goOStyle for the support!

And the wireframe of the image:

At least some additional buildings from the scene in early stages of development:

Realtime Game Environment - The Betrayal of Jarvall - Part 1 - NOTE: 30 Screenshots!

Hello there,

this time i'd like you to show some realtime stuff. Those ingame screenshots are from a mod project i'm currently working on with my brother. Because this mod is for the older roleplaying game Elder Scrolls: Oblivion (some of you might know this game), the engine isn't the cryengine2, but still usable for the things we've in mind.

Because we changed lots of shader stuff (increased bloom/hdr, increased contrast, reduced saturation, adjusted gamma/brightness, added light sepia touch etc.), the general look of the mod is slightly different from the original Oblivion.

Postwork on the screenshots only include a littlebit sharpening and some minor contrast fixes (and a jpg bug in screenshot 4, which leads to the problem that the bottom of the screenshot is grey). Fog effects, light beams and glows also appear iingame! They don't have been added in the postwork.

We hope that you'll like it, especially if you know Oblivion! ;-)

Best Regards,

SciFi Cityscape: Curse of Aladdin

My actual work: A semi cyberpunk themed cityscape which combines oriental elements with traditional science fiction.

The scene shows a small part of the downtown area of the industrialized spaceport of New Mekka. Finally mankind had to colonize space to find and harvest new resources - because they have been depleted on earth. Most of them still have to be refined directly at the ports, so nearly all spaceports include complex refineries, which grew through the cities like ivy.

Working process: Drawing sketch with pencil -> Digitized it with 3D Studio Max 2009, VRay 1.5 SP2 -> post production done in Photoshop CS4.

Hope you like it!

Old low poly game project - Brainbread - Halflife 1 coop modification

After completing our first halflife mod, Public Enemy (which i also show on my cg portfolio), we decided to create a last small fun mod for the old Halflife 1, which was even old in 2004. Most of us (including me) started with collge / university / apprenticeship in that year, so this was our last chance to finally complete another mod project together.

Because we used lots of stuff from our Public Enemy mod, the work was quite fast - and we completed the whole project within six weeks. This time, the team only consisted of just three people - the inner core, including Jonathan Erhardt (Lord Scottish), Daniel Hofer (Spinator / Zpin) and me. Again we three lead the project (if there was something to lead... ^^) and were responsible for our specific areas of work. Jonathan for most of the models, Zpin for the code - and i for the three main maps, Heavens_Gate, Slaywatch and Carnage (all shown on the screenshots below) and most of the textures (including the ironical signs). We later also included some user created maps (created by mappers from our fan community) into the mod and released them with the first patch..

Brainbread was a suprise hit! The late success, after the short life of our first mod Public Enemy. Even today the Brainbread forums are well visited (see link below) and the people are still playing our mod for Halflife 1. Brainbread has been featuerd in several magazines (as shown on the screenshot below), including the Gamestar, PC-Action (it recieved a SUPER-MOD award there!), PC-Games and was shown on TV on the german Giga-TV chanel!

And although it can't be compared wth modern games, our team created high quality work again in terms of visual content and atmosphere back at those times (although the unreal 2 engine was the highest engine standard in 2004)... and also compared to the original Halflife game if you remember the look of it. Besides that Brainbread was the first halflife mod ever, which included a (well, it might sounds political incorrect - but keep in mind that Brainbread was meant to be a classical, self-deprecating zomibe mod) gore system (GOREgeous system), which allowed the player to shoot the zombies into pieces.

The success of Brainbread was very big (as you can see on the STEAM-STATS screenshot below, which showed the mods player status a week after the release), so finally Valve software contacted us - which never lead to a collaboration. In the end, they created the famous Left 4 Dead - and some people still think that they have been heavily inspired by Brainbread... ;-)

The forums are still visited well, if you like to take a look:

Old low poly game mod project - Public Enemy, The dark Future - Halflife modification

Although this was my first real mod experience (i just created doom, duke3d, shadow warrior, heretic, hexen, wolfenstein and quake maps before), i'd like to present it here, because it shows an important part of my life.

The stuff is really old (as you can see), from 1999 / 2000, and although it can't be compared wth modern games, our team created high quality work in terms of visual content and atmosphere back at those times... and also compared to the original Halflife game if you remember the look of it.

The main team consists of Jonathan Erhardt (Lord Scottish), Daniel Hofer (Spinator/Zpin) and me. We all managed the team as team leaders in a whole and our specific sections - and my job was creating all the maps, manage the texture artists and developing the overall game world (i introduced the cyberpunk topic to our team). Daniel was responsible for coding and Jonathan for most of the model and skin texture work.

As mentioned above, I created all the maps for the mod, also using textures created by several other artists.

Public Enemy was a success in terms of game critics (most for the visual content, which pushed the limits of halflife a lot higher at those times) and recieved over 1,6 million downloads. It has been featured on several gaming sites and magazines. At the end, our next mod project Brainbread, was even more popular - and is still played today! But you'll find more information related to Brainbread on the image next to this one.

Back to this mod:

Public Enemy - The dark Future - takes place in a dystopian cyberpunk future, where global enterprises rule the world (yeah - an absolute cliche of course).

You can join a team, either the industry agents or the security units, to fight against the other players team and you're able to improve your character with cyberware and new weapons. To be honest - what a silly phrase, i know - the gameplay was also the weak point of the mod, since we all were naive young guys, who just followed the Counterstrike path. In the end, we improved the gameplay with a huge patch, although it was too late for the mod to improve its popularity again. As mentioned above, things became much better with our last Halflife zombie coop mod called Brainbread.

If you own a copy of Halflife 1, you can still download the mod at our old mod page. There are also bots available for it, so you don't have to persuade your friends for this nostalgic trip to the past:

First 3D attempts: Realtime Gameart: Pirates of the Sky

Although uploaded in 2009, this stuff has been created in 2004. Here are my first attempts creating 3d models - and, in this case, creating 3d models for video game mods. The overall work wasn't that long - a few days. I made those scenes for a freeware game project, respectively a 3d engine demo. Please keep in mind that the scene is really old, but since it shows some realtime work (instead of regular render stuff) i uploaded it for you at least.

PS.: And yes - i pushed those screens up a littlebit, although motion blur, glow effects, fog and light beams are supported by the open source 3d engine we used for the project! The credits for visual engine coding go to Martin Billinger, alias LagRange.
